Resource Repository…
Primary and secondary schools routinely support pupils through a range of primary-secondary school transitions practices and interventions. These interventions have typically been developed independently by each school, reflecting local circumstances. This has resulted in considerable variation in quality and implementation nationally. At present, there are only limited ways for schools to share their experiences of which interventions have proven effective, and which have not. Practitioners may also have limited access to the underpinning academic research, meaning approaches are not always grounded in the evidence base that could inform more effective practice.
This repository aims to address this gap. It provides schools, nationally, with access to a body of evidence of primary-secondary school transitions practices, resources and interventions. Interventions included are either academically derived or practitioner-developed and have all been empirically tested by schools, to ensure practical utility, with each documenting practitioners' experiences of implementation and the outcomes achieved. Methodology is summarised throughout, enabling practitioners to consider implementation within their own setting. Where aspects of implementation require further clarification, queries can be raised via the Advice Forum.
Resources are organised according to six priority areas identified through our systematic literature review of existing UK research on primary-secondary school transitions practice:
Familiarity — early exposure to the new school environment and staff, to reduce anxiety ahead of transition.
Relationships — supporting the maintenance and development of positive relationships with peers, staff and family.
Intrapersonal skills — fostering problem-solving, emotional regulation, adaptability and optimism.
Pastoral support — ensuring continuous, consistent support throughout the transition period.
Collaboration — strengthening continuity between primary and secondary schools.
Families — recognising the family as a key source of support during transition.
